Man, I never thought I’d say this but I love this dental practice. I love them!
I wear a mouthguard at night because I grind my teeth like crazy. And those things are kind of expensive, and so of course I had one made (at Dr. Lim’s suggestion) and then after about two weeks of nightly use, my dog ate it. No, he really ate it. It was toast.
But I’d saved the molds of my mouth, so they cut me a huge break on the price of a replacement. That was really cool of them.
Anyway, after the baby was born, I went in for X-rays and a cleaning and exam. I have to take Saturday appointments now, so Dr. Kim is my new dentist. And she found that I had a small hole in this old filling I had done a few years ago at a sketchy, scary chop shop dental office in Beverly Hills.
Now, let’s get one thing straight–thanks to a traumatic childhood experience, I am terrified of dental work. Petrified. Horrified. I hate the sounds, smells, sights, you name it. But I also know that when it comes to your teeth, prevention is everything. If you have a problem and you put it off, before you know it you’ll be wearing mail-order dentures and gumming soft food and remembering wistfully what it was like to eat a fresh, crisp apple.
So I made the appointment and couldn’t stop thinking about it and I avoided sugary foods for the two weeks between my cleaning and the filling repair because I was so scared of causing enough decay to necessitate a root canal, a procedure I have never experienced but is often used as a watermark of horrible experiences, as in, “I’d rather have a root canal than go on another date with that guy.”
The appointment day came and I got on the F and was kind of a nervous wreck the whole ride over from Brooklyn. Sat back in the chair and decided quickly, with encouragement from Dr. Kim, that it would be a good idea to put headphones on and listen to Pelican at full volume. And there was drilling and and there was water and there were scary sounds and a little pressure and then it was over in about 20 minutes and I realized two things:
- Modern dentistry is AWESOME. Lasers and water and painless needles and topical numbing gel and even the drill was quieter than I expected. Imagine having that done with a foot-pedaled drill like our grandparents did? Oh my God.
- Dr. Kim is a really great dentist. Like Dr. Lim, she is gentle and knowledgeable and puts up with my ridiculous phobias with a lot of grace. Did I mention that I love this dental practice?
The prices were totally fair but even if they hadn’t been, I’d go back in a second. I cannot recommend these wonderful dentists and their lovely staff highly enough. No matter which doctor you see, you won’t be disappointed. And I say this as a person who would sooner have a root canal than…well, you get the idea.

I’ve been through many dentists in my area and Stephen Lim is by FAR the best. I’d strongly recommend checking him out if you’re looking for a good dentist — extremely friendly and knowledgeable, painless procedures (didn’t even need anesthetic), clean facilities, cutting edge equipment and procedures (believe me, it makes a BIG difference).
Even got rid of pain I’ve had for years from sensitive teeth (incorrectly diagnosed by several dentists) and repaired a chipped tooth (that I didn’t realize could even be done and no other dentist ever volunteered to fix). Make no mistake, this is definitely an A caliber dentist!

If I had known about dentist-rating websites, I would’ve written about Dr. Lim ages ago! I’ve had several different DDS’s in the past, and there is no comparison – he is the BEST around.
When ppl think of dental appointments, you often grimace, but he almost makes you look forward to getting dental work done! He has state-of-the-art equipment, including x-rays using computers so you don’t have to wait for the “film” to get developed. He also has this machine that looks like it’s right out of Star Trek that takes an x-ray of your whole mouth at once!
And when I needed to get a part of my tooth enamel bonded (b/c of sensitivity), he showed me an educational video clip to better explain what was going on. I loved the numbing agent used on my gums before the needle was injected, too. And throughout the time I got my filling done, he asked if I felt any pain. All of this shows his bedside-manner: he is a caring dentist!!
So there’s no compromise when you go to him. You get it all: he’s knowledgeable, explains everything thoroughly, no pain, along with state-of-the-art equipment and the latest advances in dentistry. The only thing I wish is that he were closer to where I lived! But I’m willing to travel the distance because he is just that good!
